The TYPO3 Lifecycle: Release Cycles, LTS Support & ELTS Explained
Fundamentally, the release cycle or lifecycle of TYPO3 versions consists of 3 phases:
a new TYPO3 version is released every 18 months. Each comes with official security and maintenance updates for at least 3 years. Security patches quickly close any new vulnerabilities that are discovered. This ensures that the current website can be operated continuously for a minimum of 3 years.
The pay-for-use Extended Long Term Support (ELTS) phase begins once the support for an LTS version has expired. An ELTS licence for the system only maintains the status quo of the installation in terms of security and compatibility. No advanced developments are provided.
Companies, institutes and many others using TYPO3 as an Enterprise CMS (ECMS) in a professional environment require investment security and base their decisions on a profitable return on investment (ROI). As an agency, we therefore only use stable Long-Term Support versions (LTS) for relaunch and upgrade projects.
The following LTS versions are currently in active use and are officially supported:
- TYPO3 13.4 LTS
- TYPO3 12.4 LTS
TYPO3 GmbH also officially supports the following versions through its ELTS service:
- TYPO3 11.5 ELTS
- TYPO3 10.4 ELTS
- TYPO3 9.5 ELTS (4th year exclusive for TYPO3 partners)
However, an ELTS version is not a long-term solution; it is only intended to give you time in the short term to plan the upgrade you will ultimately need to ensure that your website continues to be secure.
